Why Does My Child Forget Everything? It’s Not a Memory Problem—It’s a Science Problem

🧠 Learning and Forgetting Happen Simultaneously

This is a universal truth for all humans: forgetting is normal, while having a photographic memory is rare and exceptional. Humans are wired to forget—this doesn’t mean that children lack talent or aren’t putting in effort. Instead of asking “Why can’t my child remember?”, we should reframe our thinking to “Of course my child will forget!” Don’t expect a child to retain all new information after just one exposure.

🧠 Human Memory Follows a Predictable Pattern

Over a century ago, scientist Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered the forgetting curve, which illustrates how memory declines over time without review. According to his research, people forget about 42% of newly learned information within 20 minutes, 56% after one hour, and 74% after one day—unless they review it. So, it’s completely normal for children to forget what they learned shortly after class. This isn’t a sign of poor memory, low ability, or inattentiveness.

🧠 The Best Time to Review Is When Memory Starts to Decline

🤯 If you notice your child starting to forget what they’ve learned—don’t despair!
🤩 This is actually the best time to reinforce learning and slow down memory loss.

Scientific research shows that the most effective review happens during the steep drop in the forgetting curve—just before a large portion of the content is forgotten. Reviewing at this time strengthens memory. Spaced repetition helps reduce the rate of forgetting, extends memory retention, and gradually transforms short-term memory into long-term memory.

🧠 Why Do Homeschooled Children Often Learn Better?

Homeschooled families tend to understand memory patterns better and structure their study time more effectively. By using short sessions and frequent reviews, they help children store new information more firmly in memory.

In contrast, families who rely solely on a once-a-week Chinese class and don’t review at home will see their child forget much more quickly, slowing overall progress. Think about it: a week after a lesson, a child who follows memory principles might retain 90% of the material and be ready to learn new things. A child who doesn’t review may only remember 20%, yet still be expected to take in new information. Over time, the gap between the two will grow wider.

🧠 Ensure Input Surpasses Forgetting

Many people wonder, “I spend so much time studying—why can’t I remember anything?” The truth is, with long and intensive study sessions, much of what was initially learned is forgotten before the session ends, making the time ineffective.

On the other hand, shorter sessions with more frequent reviews lead to better retention. For example, instead of studying once a week for an hour, breaking the study into three 20-minute sessions throughout the week is far more effective.

🧠 How Else Can We Extend Memory and Reduce Forgetting?

In addition to repeated practice, spaced learning, and reducing the volume of content per session, there are other ways to enhance memory and slow down forgetting. We’ll explore these strategies in future articles.
